All students are currently completing final drafts of their conclusion. Click here for a copy of the conclusion handout… Conclusion brief
I hope your individual coursework is going well, and you have perhaps completed your introduction and hypothesis over Easter, if not more! Remember that your hypothesis must compare your chosen river to some aspect of pollution on the river Sow. For example… I predict that the River Sow will be more chemically polluted than the River……

A 3rd extra-curricular session using GIS will be the Thursday 7th June after school at 3.10pm until 4.10pm. Below is the instructions you will need for the session….

DEADLINE FOR COMPLETED RIVER SOW PROJECT IS…
Tuesday 5th June, 2007.
DEADLINE FOR COMPLETED INDIVIDUAL STUDY IS…
Preferably before we break up for the Summer. At the VERY latest – the first lesson back in September.
Miss i have just totally confused myself with the Analysis. Ive wrote it 3 times and still so confused. I can write the bit about why i did it and i expected to find but its when i go on to explain about all the three site I just say the same stuff over and over again and can not find anything to say. Can you Help?
Becky you are probably repeating yourself as you are giving just general reasons. The trick is to make your expanation place specific. For example, when you are analysing site 1 oxygen… look for specific factors about site 1 which could have meant it got the highest result. Look at your field sketches and your maps and pick out specific factors about site 1 which would mean it got the highest score for oxygen. You could give specific examples of pollution sources off your maps/fieldsketches to say why, even though it got the highest score for oxygen, it could have been higher… try also to link to other tests like TBI and BMWP… animals need oxygen to survive!
Does this make sense?
Geoimo
Erm yh i think so
Thanks Miss
Becky… do Oxygen sites 1-4 or even just site 1 and let me read it.
My e mail is SteveImo@aol.com
miss i can’t find the INDIVIDUAL STUDY sheets where are they?
A copy of the sheet can be downloaded now Dan. Hope everything is going OK.
Miss I am really confused about what to write for the constraints on conclusion. Could you help me please.
Constraints in what context?
Constraints of the project … what questions has it left unanswered? what has it not managed to achieve?
Constraints of river management… how river management has not been successful? what river management cannot manage? difficulties of management?
thanks miss I think I know what to write about now.
miss, what website did you get the map off for the field sketch map thing?
miss i don’t get the questionnaire could you explain it for me again? cheers
Are you still stuck Liam, or is what i said to you yesterday enough???
Basically, it is an extra piece of dat other than all the others. Something to show your initative with.
Good luck.
Miss i was just wondering…. do you have to say in your individ study why water quality is important and all that research stuff about the different pollutants?
or can you leave it out scene as it is in our Sow projects?
Tar
Make it in reference to your river. Why is river quality important on river x…. make it place specific. What pollution sources/types are in the local vacinity of your river.
The aim is to show your knowledge and your initiative…
good luck…
Dan… your aegis has not saved as an aegis file. Will have to print in September. not a prob, will remember you have it when I mark it. Bring in your hard copy in September and we will print it.
Have a great summer. Hope Work experience is going well.
thanks you to
miss ive started my individual study but dnt no if im doing it right
e.g have i got to compare my rivers oxygen with the river sows oxygen?
because i havent done that ive just described my river the same way we did the river so
please help before i do anymore
Ruth, if you haven’t got the info sheet for your individual study you can download it from here. On there it takes you through it. Basically – YES YOU MUST compare your river with the Sow otherwise there is no point in you doing an individual study. That means every test you do you dont have to analyse sites 1-3 again, but when you analyse your site – compare it to the other 3 sites of the Sow. I.e. has your site got higer/lower/same oxygen result – fairly polluted? slightly polluted etc… and why you think this. Link oxygen dont forget to other tests such as Nitrates/phosphates and ph which can reduce the oxygen levels. Link to wildlife (you will have to be speculative here as you have no biology results) i.e. I would expect low oxgen levels to….
Hope this helps – let me know if you are struggling….
hey miss
im almost done on my individual study but i av forgotten how to do cross-sections, im not sure wot goes on which axis and wot to label them. i av searched through all of my sheets from the river sow but i havent found any old cross sections to look at. please help.
thankyou
x axis at the top – diatance along the transect (cm)
y axis up the side – distance from tape to stream bottom (cm)
does this make sense???
good luck,
miss
thanks miss
area = a (number of cm² covered by water)
—
b (number of cm² representing 1m²)
how do i find ‘B’ im confused i have found out ‘A’ but im not sure what im supposed to do to find ‘B’. sorry to be a pain .
miss you know the questionaire graphs
do i do a graph for each one?
seems quite alot of graphs
Depends on your axis.
This is hard to explain in words without showing you but here we go…
From 0cm go 100 cm along your top axis… (careful if you have converted into metres – then it would be 1).
From 0cm go 100cm down your y axis.
Follow these two points to box off a section of your graph. Count up all the CENTIMETRE SQUARES in this boxed off section.
That is B.
So it is how many cm squares that are covered by water divided by this total…. that is your area (in msq).
To calculuate discharge – AREA x Average velocity = ? cumecs
Does this make sense Jaye?
Hi Miss it Tom!
Just wondering. Do you have a nonogram sheet i could download because i thought i can compare the oxygen saturation then!
Thanks
Liam…You should graph each question – unless you have asked a completely pointless question which doesn’t need graphing – then you shouldn’t have asked it in the first place! Any two questions which you can graph together can do 2 at once…
Wouldnt worry about doing loads though – as long as you show you can organise your data and present in suitable ways aim for about 5 or so.
Tom… don’t have a nongram sheet… or even on to scan. So don’t worry about it. Still get full marks with everything else.
If you really really want it.. get one first day back….
miss
yeh i understand how to do it now thanks miss.
hi miss
ive sone my analysis but i dont know if its right because people are doing different thinkgs and now im really confused
ive compared my rivers result with the average of all the river sows sites…..is this right ?
have i got to explain y we have tested for it eg, we tested for nitrates because it is one of the main short term pollution and it effects oxygen….
have i got to say all that agen because i havent ??
from Ruth
You dont need to explain why you tested – you have done this already.
your analysis should be a comparison between your river and the sow. not an average of the sow.
- has your river go higher/lower/same oxygen levels as site 1? 2? 3? 4? obviously dont repeat yourself loads… it is what you say differently that gets credited… it is the comparisons which is therefore most important…
Everyone will be different stop comparing yourself!
Just make sure your are not comparing the average of the sow – that distorts the data. each site is different!
miss, for the individual study result for my oxygen i got 52 p.p.m, so should it be 5.2 p.p.m becuase bishops offley was only 14.14 p.p.m. If it is meant to be 5.2 p.p.m it would mean it was the lowest score so could i have done the test wrong?
The result must be 5.2ppm. 52 is way too high. If you wish to retest in College this week please do you wont get into trouble!!
